HYPNOSIS AND SELF-HYPNOSIS |

What is hypnosis and self-hypnosis? Hypnosis is the process of one person leading another into a focused state of attention. Self-hypnosis is the process of reaching the focused state without the help of a hypnotist, either live or on tape or CD. People have been in a focused state of attention many times in their lives ...watching TV, reading a good book, driving the car, just before you fall asleep and as you wake up.
Most people are aware of only two states of consciousness, awake and asleep but there is a large area of consciousness between awake and asleep. These states are called altered states of consciousness, and can be measured by an electroencephalograph |
or EEG machine, a machine that measures the electrical current generated by brain activity.
We need to learn a little about the brain and how it controls and affects the body. The brain is split into two sections, the left and right hemispheres. Each hemisphere has different functions with two crossover networks.
The left hemisphere stores our vocabulary, numbers, linear and rational thinking. The right hemisphere operates with pictures and non-linear thinking or intuition and knowing.
To put it simply, the left operates on straight lines and the right in circular patterns. |
Think about the two hemispheres of your brain as two personal computers. Both computers went on line or were turned on inside your mother’s womb, possibly as early as three months after conception. Consider your amazing brain’s database, storage capacity and retrieval system. In the computer world we get very excited about each chip invented because of increasing storage capacity and miniaturization. The brain’s storage capacity seems to be infinite or at the very least, beyond our understanding.
The brain stores every bit of information from our life experience beginning as early as 6 months before our birth until our death. Every thought, feeling, every sound which you have heard, sights which you have seen, every input through your five senses is stored on each of millions of cells |
that make up the memory section of the brain.
In addition to all of this information, the brain stores all the physical input from the millions of nerve endings recording pain in your body, thousands of sensory cells recording hot and cold, and every other function of your entire body. All of this in each cell, which we must put under a microscope to see.
The storage capacity of your brain is amazing but the type and quality of information that is stored can and does present problems in your daily life. For example, the information stored in the brains computers before seven to ten years of age may affect your actions both physically and emotionally for the rest of your life. The major factors making up self-esteem are recorded before ten years of age. |
| CONTROL OF BODY FUNCTIONS |
Another function of our computers that is equally spectacular is that they operate every part of the body...every muscle, every gland. You are now consciously in control of a very small part of your total body. You can consciously move various parts of your body, your arms, legs, eyelids at will, but can you change your heart beat, can you slow it down or speed it up.....can you control bleeding either externally or internally |
at will. Or can you relax a certain muscle grouping that may be in spasm or cramping or causing pain. Unless you have learned the skills taught in my course, the answer will be no. Is it difficult to learn to do these things, the answer is also no. That is, if you learn to operate your computers with the skills and procedures taught in my course and even more important, if you practice the skills on a regular basis. |
The beginning is simply knowing that it’s possible. In other words, setting aside current belief systems. If Christopher Columbus had believed the scientific facts of his time, that the world was flat and that if you sailed far enough you would drop in to a black void, he certainly would not have sailed and discovered the new world.
Setting aside your belief systems does not necessarily mean that you are going to be gullible |
or taken to the cleaners by some good salesperson. Simply become aware of your beliefs and be willing to change them.
When you start exploring your inner world, remember that you are in control, as much as if you were exploring the external world. It is not necessary and it is important that you don’t give up any of your personal power to a particular teacher or philosophy. |
In The Self Hypnosis Course™ you learn the procedures for conscious muscle control, increasing and decreasing circulation and releasing muscle spasms, bleeding control, programming the immune system, anesthetic procedures for pain and how to reduce and stop headaches, including migraines. Since the brain does control all body functions, you learn how to communicate on a conscious basis with your own brain.
The main skill that you learn in this course is called reaching an altered state of consciousness |
by the procedure of self-hypnosis. While you may have heard this term in connection with taking drugs, in the movies or other far out stories, it is a scientific term used to describe your consciousness between the normal waking state and normal unconscious sleep state.
When you have learned to reach a deep altered state, you are in a position to affect your autonomic nervous system by direct communication.... gradually learning to control all of the body functions that I have talked about. |
The best overall reason for learning to operate in altered states is that it places your computers and body in a very special rest mode. Currently your best mode of rest for your body is normal sleep. When you have experienced a full half hour in an altered state, you will have received the equivalent rest of 6 to 8 hours of regular sleep. According to studies |
done by Herbert Benson M.D. at Harvard Medical School, your metabolism, respiration and other body measurements change radically in an altered state compared to normal sleep...giving a much higher degree of rest, not only to the physical body but also to the mind. |
| ALTERED STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS |
Now let’s go to the explanation of altered states of consciousness. As a part of its normal function every brain broadcasts an electrical energy. Electrodes placed on the scull and taken by wire to a machine called an electroencephalograph or EEG can measure this energy. Medical technology uses the measurements of this energy to diagnose problems in the brain and nervous system.
We will use the information to explain consciousness and unconsciousness, sleep and the normal waking state and all of the areas of consciousness in between. In the guide booklet that comes with The Self-Hypnosis Course™ there are brain wave |
charts to better illustrate the altered states. The charts show both hemispheres of the brain and the measurements in two dimensions. The current coming from the brain is alternating current or AC.
This is the same as the electrical energy that you use in your home. The current in your home is measured in two dimensions, frequency and voltage.
The frequency is 60 cycles per second or 60 hertz and the voltage is 110 to 120 volts. Your brain energy is measured in the same two dimensions. Of course the voltage is much lower, in the millionths of a volt. |
Human consciousness is divided into four categories, Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. The Beta frequency range covers the normal awake state and the Delta frequencies cover the unconscious sleep state. The Alpha and Theta frequencies make up the altered states.
If you were to close your eyes and calm your mind, you would enter Alpha the first classification of altered states. When we fall asleep we relax our mind and body to the point that our focus is internal, thus shifting the majority of our brain waves to the sleep range and finally into unconsciousness.
To come back to the waking state after sleep, requires a reverse in the process. Many people spend time in the altered state frequencies on |
their way back to the waking state. For example, if you’re awake, thinking and hearing sounds in the external world but your eyes are still closed, you’re probably in the alpha brain wave range, an altered state.
It’s very important that you know that the only unconsciousness in human consciousness is when you are asleep or the majority of your brain waves are below 4 cycles per second. The brain waves are the same if you are under anesthetic or received a blow to your head and was unconscious.
When the majority of your brain waves are anywhere in the range of altered states you are very definitely conscious. |
The old tales of loss of control in hypnosis, meditation or altered states is simply not true. I believe that you have more control in the altered states than in the waking state. The bottom of the |
range, 0 cycles per second, is death. As you know, today, many deaths under clinical conditions are based on no brain energy for a period of time. |
The reason that I use hypnosis/self-hypnosis together is that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. In other words if someone is helping you focus with suggestions from the outside, that person is functioning as a hypnotist. But it is your focusing which is bringing about your change in consciousness rather than any power that the hypnotist or person may have. When you have learned to focus without the help of an outside voice making suggestions, whether it’s live or on CD, you are then doing real self-hypnosis.
The process that I will teach you and lead you through until such time as you can do it on your own, is my special brand of self-hypnosis. It’s different that most forms of hypnosis or self-hypnosis which are being used by teachers and therapists |
today. In regular hypnosis you are asked to do very little internally very little with your imagination. You are mostly asked to focus on the hypnotist’s voice and what is being said.
In my self-hypnosis procedure, you are asked to remain very aware of your senses and use your imagination. This lowers the amplitude of the brain’s left hemisphere and increases the amplitude of the right hemisphere. After some practice, you remain very aware of what’s going on in the external world, even in a deep state of focus or in the lower end of the theta brain wave range.
A good way to think about right and left hemispheres of the brain is that the left operates by and with words, and the right operates by and with pictures. |
The United States and most of the Western world is a left-brain society. That is, almost everyone operates his or her life primarily through left-brain function. Our love affair with science and the external world, which we have been able to produce as a result of the linear processes, has been amazing. As a result of this training and focus, in normal waking conditions, most Americans show very high left brain amplitude and a low right brain amplitude.
A very high percentage of our formal education process through postgraduate degrees involves left-brain information and process. Currently there are few courses offered through high school that are right brain oriented and those |
that are, such as music, art, theater, have in recent years been cut to the bone.
A few educators are trying to move in the direction of balance but most people still don’t know or don’t appreciate the current imbalance and continue to push hard for math and more and more science courses.
Many people in our society are hoping that the answers to the problems that we now face in our lives will come from new technological knowledge.
In other words, spend enough money on enough education and the necessary magic pills will be invented. |
Many of the answers that we are frantically searching for, particularly in the area of physical, mental and emotional health will not be found in technologically developed magic pills.
The necessity for inner exploration and through that process, the development of more and more self-responsibility with an ever-decreasing dependency on the external world is to me a much more sensible and necessary approach. This does not mean that we have to stop all technology or stop going to the experts for our answers. It does mean that we must move toward the balance of our inner and outer worlds. The key word here is “balance”.
Many of the skills that are taught in The Self-Hypnosis Course™ will help you work on your |
brain's imbalance and with a little time and practice you will experience wonderful changes internally as well as externally in your daily life.
The self-hypnosis method that you learn in The Self-Hypnosis Course™ requires no religious or spiritual philosophy change. The only life-style change required is adding a daily one-half hour self-hypnosis session. Most of the skills taught in the course can be learned and used after a few weeks of practice.
Considering the way we think and act in the Western world, my approach is practical and a fast easy method that can be learned and practiced by everyone. And considering the stress problems and diseases that we face today, these skills may be necessary for survival. |
